Trim Hunger founder Josif Wittnik has earned the 2024 Deborah Shimer Excellence Award for his compassion, kindness, strength, and collaborative leadership. Josif received the award at a gathering of his peers, the 2025 Salon Professional Education Conference (SPEC) in Santa Rosa, California. Wittnik is an owner of The Salon Professional Academy in Appleton.

The presenter shared that Wittnik’s commitment to giving back has had a far-reaching impact. Since 2018, he has helped direct tens of thousands of dollars to the Green Olive Orphanage in Mombasa, Kenya. That was a cause dear to the late Deborah Shimer. Yet his work through Trim Hunger has made perhaps the greatest difference locally, for individuals and families facing food insecurity.
trim hunger approaches ten years of community service
Through Trim Hunger, he has sparked a movement that will celebrate its 10th anniversary this November. In that time, Trim Hunger has raised nearly $1 million in cash and in-kind donations to fight hunger. His work has strengthened neighborhoods, supported families, and brought communities together.

From organizing cut-a-thons, national fundraisers and local food drives, Josif’s vision shows how one idea can make a real difference. “Helping more people is the gas in my tank,” said Wittnik. That unwavering commitment continues to energize Trim Hunger’s mission.
Wittnik faces his challenges head on to serve others
Josif’s journey is also a testament to resilience. He survived a brain injury in Jamaica and a battle with cancer. Yet he is determined to serve others. During the ceremony, the presenter praised Josif for turning adversity into an even stronger drive to help those around him.
With this award we also celebrate the incredible ripple effect of Josif’s dedication. His work reminds us all that one person’s generosity, compassion, and leadership can build stronger communities and brighter futures.
Congratulations, Josif, on this well-deserved honor — and thank you for continuing to inspire us all with your example.
