dining out with little chefs for a cause

It was a culinary adventure all in the name of supporting young students and raising awareness of good nutrition and the farm to table movement. The winners of the recent “LIttle Chef Charitable Cook-off” teamed up with chefs from four popular Fox Valley restaurants. The professional chefs worked with the young chefs to prepare the student’s recipes for a restaurant full of guests.

Proceeds from the event went toward a student garden within the Hortonville-Greenville school district. Each participating student in the Little Chefs dining event received a $500 scholarship.

Middle schooler Payton Willenkamp worked with the executive chef of the Fox River Brewing Company’ to prepare her recipe. They served her meal to 80 guests.Tuesday, Chef Payton made a stir-fried chicken teriyaki with her homemade teriyaki sauce, vegetables and the secret ingredient: pineapple.

Trim Hunger founder Josif Wittnik told a FOX 11 reporter at the event that the idea of the little chef event is to help with the school’s garden program. “So that they can continue to grow fresh produce all year long. By doing that the kids will start eating a little more healthy things.”

Josif was also overheard saying “it was the coolest thing ever. We were sold out every night!”

The Little Chefs dining out events took place in 2017 and 2018. Participating restaurants included Fox River Brewing Company, Stone Arch Brew Pub, Ginger Rootz and Jaripeo Mexican Grill.
