Trim Hunger provides healthy treat bags for children at Catalpa Health

Sometimes children show up for their therapy sessions at Catalpa Health on an empty stomach. In fact, some haven’t eaten all day. When Trim Hunger founder Josif Wittnik first heard those stories, he knew he had found the non-profit’s next mission. Trim Hunger was going to do what it could to make those kids’ day a little brighter. After much discussion with Catalpa’s leaders, they came up with the answer: healthy treats bags!

The Partnership Begins

At Trim Hunger, our mission has always been to nourish and uplift our community. We’re thrilled to announce this collaboration with Catalpa Health, a pediatric outpatient mental health and wellness organization which serves an average of 7,500 children annually. Until now, the snack bags were provided by personal donations. With Trim Hunger’s help, those treats can now be a staple in how they help treat their young patients. “Their session goes so much smoother if they have something to eat,” says Facility Lead Kelly Rutten. “They don’t always tell you they haven’t eaten.”

volunteers go shopping for healthy snacks

Starting in February of 2025, our dedicated volunteers embarked on a monthly mission to provide those treat bags to Catalpa Health. The first outing was both fun and successful, setting a positive tone for the ongoing initiative. Patt, Sue and Alex met at the grocery store with shopping lists in hand, lists that were full of specific needs for the students. They filled the carts with fruits, popcorn, crackers, granola and low sugar drinks. While Patt and Sue successfully navigated the aisles, Alex kept a running total. After checking out, the three filled the Trim Hunger car with bags and bags of goodies and they were on their way to Catalpa!

“filling” a need

When the volunteers arrived, the Catalpa team was ready with plenty of table space and all the bags they would need. Some of the bags were for their younger patients, some as young as three years old. Those looked like coloring book pages and included markers. Across the room were treat bags for the older population, with jokes and puzzles. Catalpa serves kids and teens up to 18 years old. After a few days, Rutten told us that their providers absolutely love the snack bags because the patients are actively using them during their sessions. “They eat while they talk and color or solve the puzzles.”

“Hunger is the biggest hidden secret”

These treat bags are more than just snacks; they’re a small way to support kids who are facing tough times. Sometimes the treats are given out in a group setting, in after-school sessions. “It’s more of a social group,” says Rutten. “When everyone has their snack bags, it seems to brighten the atmosphere. Hunger is the biggest hidden secret.” By meeting immediate needs and bringing a little joy, Trim Hunger aims to complement the essential mental health services Catalpa Health provides.
